About the department
Academic studies in the Accounting Department are relatively new, and the demand for accountants has increased with the continuous economic changes in the Iraqi economy and its openness to global markets. In recent years, there has been a high interest in joining the department.
The establishment of the Accounting Department dates back to the academic year 1946-1947 when the College of Commerce and Economics was founded, It later split into two colleges, and in 1963, the College of Commerce became an independent college with an independent accounting department. It merged with the Higher Institute of Accounting, which was established in 1959, where graduates were awarded a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Accounting and Management.
In 1968, the College of Administration and Economics was established, and the Accounting Department became a branch of the Management Department. In 1986-1987, the Accounting Department became an independent department until the present time.
Since that time, the Accounting Department has made great strides in its academic career by achieving scientific and developmental accomplishments, providing academic staff to accounting departments in the college, other Iraqi universities, and technical institutes, as well as professionals in government departments and the private sector. Additionally, department faculty members contribute to teaching accounting departments in Arab countries and other colleges in Iraq, in addition to participating in many domestic and international conferences.
The department’s students represent about 30% of the total college population, and there is a great interest and urgent desire among students to join the department’s academic programs in both morning and evening studies. The department provides students with accounting knowledge that enables them to practice accounting efficiently and effectively, and to contribute to the job market’s needs in a constantly developing and changing environment.
