About the department

The Department of Operations Research is one of the distinguished academic departments at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Baghdad. It was recently established in 2024 to serve as a specialized academic pillar for the study and application of quantitative and scientific methods to support decision-making, enhance performance efficiency, and develop management and economics in various institutions.

The department aims to prepare qualified scientific personnel with advanced knowledge in mathematical modeling, data analysis, decision support systems, optimization techniques, and simulation, with an emphasis on integrating theoretical foundations with practical applications to address real-world challenges in diverse work environments.

The department’s academic program also seeks to equip students with high-level analytical and technical skills that qualify them to work in a variety of fields, including economic planning, project management, data analysis, quality management, supply chains, and digital transformation in public- and private-sector institutions.

The department keeps pace with the latest scientific and technological developments in line with the requirements of the local and international labor markets, thereby strengthening its role in supporting economic development and evidence-based decision-making founded on sound scientific principles and precise quantitative methods.

The Department’s message

To provide competencies that are practically trained and aligned with scientific developments in the field of operations research and decision-making, in a manner consistent with the aspirations of the national development plan for society, while ensuring continuous and practical improvement of research and studies in this field.

The Department’s Objectives

  1. The Department of Operations Research and Decision-Making seeks to achieve a set of objectives that are consistent with the general objectives of the College of Administration and Economics, as follows:

    1. To qualify national competencies through academic and practical training to meet the needs of the public and private labor markets in this specialization and to contribute significantly to national development and the progress taking place in Iraq across all fields.
    2. To provide scientific and practical consultancy services to governmental and private institutions.
    3. To contribute to enriching the Arabic library through authorship and translation in the field of operations research and decision-making.
    4. To contribute effectively to the academic and applied aspects of operations research and decision-making through innovative applied scientific research, participation in international conferences, and hosting some of these conferences.
    5. To provide specialized studies in operations research and decision-making through Higher Diploma research, Master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations that offer practical solutions to various problems affecting society.

Acceptance Inputs

The department admits exclusively graduates of the scientific branch of preparatory (secondary) education.

Learning Outcomes

First – Degree: Graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Operations Research.

Second – Learning Outcomes (Knowledge and Skills):

  • The graduate possesses sound scientific knowledge of the theoretical and applied methods of operations research and data analysis.
  • The graduate is able to use software packages for data processing and decision-making, including SPSS, WinQSB, and Excel.
  • The graduate possesses the necessary skills to use modern software.
  • The graduate is able to interpret results and present them in a scientific manner that serves economic, administrative, and research fields.

Fields of Employment:

The qualifications acquired by graduates—knowledge and skills gained through the academic program—can be utilized in the following areas:

  • Government departments and state institutions in the fields of planning, statistics, and data management.
  • Financial and banking institutions, insurance companies, and economic analysis.
  • Research centers, universities, and statistical study and survey projects.
