About the department

First and foremost, we must circle the word Statistics Ihsaa’ in Arabic, which has many meanings, as it came from among the beautiful names of God. The name (Al-Muhsi) is one of the most beautiful names for God. verse, And if we trace the word Ihsaa’ we see it mentioned at least in eleven verses in the Holy Qur’an, many experts  have interpreted the connotation and perception of Ihsaa’ in the Holy Qur’an and they came to conclude four interpretations:

  1. Preservation and control: We find this meaning in Surah al-Kahf – verse 49 – “leaves nothing, small or big, but it has enumerated it”
  2. Writing: We find this meaning in Surah Yaseen – verse 12 – “We keep track of all things in a Clear Registry”
  3. Limiting and encompassing: We find this meaning in Surat Al-Jinn – verse 28 – “And He has tallied everything by number.”
  4. Energy and power: We find this meaning in Surah Ibrahim – verse 34 – “And if you were to count Allah’s blessings, you could not enumerate them”

The word Ihsaa’ was mentioned in the hadith by the Prophet Muhammad bless be upon him, when he said, “Allah has ninety-nine Names, one-hundred less one; and he who memorized them all by heart will enter Paradise”

And when statistics became a science that must utilized, there needed to be competent statistics teachers in the forties of the last century globally, and that was in most cases with the mathematics departments or with the faculties of administration, economics or commerce. Later on, the statistical studies became an independent department and their location depends on the nature of the study.

In Iraq, the Department of Statistics was established in the year 1964 in the College of Economics and Political Science. The first course graduated from it included 17 male and female students in 1968.the next year, the College of Administration and Economics was formed. The Department of Statistics was one of the three scientific departments of this college, which are statistics, economics and administration.
