About the department
1955 was the year the department was established within the Faculty of Commerce and Economics, as a reaction to the necessities of the financial and banking sector and other ministries. It is worth noting that the Economics Department accepts graduates of preparatory studies in its scientific and literary branches, and related specialized institutes.

Department Objectives
- Prepare specialized staff in economics and provide them with knowledge and skills related to economic theories and schools of thought to meet the needs of society.
- Enhancing the capabilities of teachers and students in the field of Economic Thought and ways to achieve economic growth to address economic problems according to” financial conditions and crises.
- Production of knowledge and scientific research in the field of competence that serves the community and supports the requirements of the national economy.
- Developing curricula to meet the requirements of the Iraqi environment and keeping pace with the development of economic theories and their applications.
- Providing consulting services and continuing education to various segments of society and economic sectors.
- Preparing training and development programs to qualify employees of institutions in the public and private sectors and develop their potential in the economic fields.
The department’s message
In order for the economy to have a pivotal role in achieving sustainable development, the Department of Economics is responsible for graduating an efficient and competent generation capable of allocating and using economical, natural, technological and social resources in order to serve as much as possible of social demands, not for the members of the contemporary generation, but rather to include the succeeding generations. Furthermore, building capable human resources to spread science and knowledge, and to serve society ethically and professionally. As well as to communicate with various institutions to consolidate societal behaviors, follow up on global developments of economic activity in both its real and monetary aspects, lastly keep pace with them on the theoretical and practical levels.
Acceptance Inputs
students enroll in this department must be a graduate of The scientific secondary schools, Arts secondary schools or Vocational Education commerce secondary schools with 20% of the number of study seats for the year of admission.
Learning Outcomes
The graduates of the Department of Economics who got a bachelor’s degree in economics are awarded the degree of an assistant observer or assistant economic researcher in all activities and businesses in public organizations and business institutions.
