This study aims to analyze the impact of exchange rate changes on the balance of payments in Iraq during the period (2004-2024). The Iraqi economy is considered unilateral, as it relies on the global market to meet growing demand. It also relies on oil revenues to finance public spending, making it vulnerable to external shocks and changes related to global oil markets.
Selected international experiences were examined to demonstrate the impact of exchange rate changes on the balance of payments. The study followed a descriptive, analytical, and quantitative approach, adopting the Iraqi dinar exchange rate in the parallel and official exchange markets during the study period as independent variables, and the balance of payments as the dependent variable to demonstrate the relationship between changes in the exchange rate and their impact on the balance of payments. The nature of the Iraqi economy’s structure is inflexible and requires diversification of its sources of income. The Central Bank of Iraq is working to address this issue sustainably, aiming to narrow the gap between the official and parallel exchange rates through its monetary instruments. This research contributes to highlighting one of the dilemmas that unilateral economies suffer from, as the repercussions of the reflection of the economic structure in the fluctuations that occur between the official and parallel exchange rates, and what this fluctuation reflects on the balance of payments.
